Tara Gilchrist has been working with clay from an early age. She grew up in Toronto and studied at The Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax. She began her full time commitment to clay when she opened Chetolah Pottery Studio in May 2007. Currently she works, sells and lives in her freshly restored barn in the heart of Dorset, Ontario. The barn also boasts a seasonal espresso bar, kids clay classes and yoga classes taught by her wife Caitlin Hutt. She connects with her natural surroundings to create relaxed & truly unique pottery. A wide range of ceramic products are sold out of the Dorset gallery. She creates practical wheel thrown items like bowls, mugs and platters and fires them in her electric kiln.

Voted “Canada’s Best Country Store” a trip to Dorset isn’t complete until you visit Robinson’s General Store. With more than 14,000 square feet of retail space, shoppers can find gifts, souvenirs, housewares, clothing and footwear (moccasins are a specialty). Robinson’s also includes a Food Town supermarket, Home Hardware and “The Red Onion” ladies boutique. There is plenty of parking in the area and several docks available for shoppers arriving on Lake of Bays. The original building is now part of the dry goods section which boasts the original tin ceiling. The old-fashioned atmosphere continues throughout the store (you will still see a birch bark canoe and polar bear skin hanging on the ceiling) along with modern conveniences such as scanning cash registers at the front end.
We are very proud to be celebrating 40 years in the family business this year. Here is a little background to how we came about. Dorset Timber Mart was purchased by Reginald and France Mouland in 1976 originally operated by Robert Abernathy as Dorset Building Centre. The business started with a small hardware shop, three storage sheds, a pine furniture store, a woodworking shop and one delivery truck. Over the years Reginald and France renovated the hardware store, and added two more storage sheds, and brought up three daughters, Jackie, Chantal and Julie. In the early eighties, Reginald became part of a provincial buying group called “Homecare Building Centres”, and was able to use the buying power of the group while staying independent. Reginald passed away in 1996, leaving the operations to his wife France. Over the next four years France and her daughter and son-in-law, Chantal and Rob Hamilton, worked on growing the business and learning the ropes.
Dorset Building Centre changed its name to Dorset Timber Mart in 1997, this was a decision made by “Homecare” in order to distinguish its buying members as primarily lumber and hardware retailers, and to stop the confusion between “Homecare Building Centres”, and “Home Hardware”. After the name change, Rob and Chantal purchased the business from France, and over the next fifteen years have grown the business to include eight full time staff and three more storage sheds; with future plans to expand the retail store. Three years ago, their son Alex started working in the shop full time in the hopes of continuing the family tradition for a third generation. We are one of the only lumber yards in Ontario to boast an outdoor facility where all of our products are under cover.
